Can you introduce yourself and share how you got into music?
Hi, I am Greta Cipriani, also known as Meghan B. I am a professional pianist. I started playing the piano at the age of 6, followed the traditional academic path, and refined my skills at the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome, one of the most prestigious in Italy. I pursued a career as a concert pianist, but in reality, I have always been a creative person. At 19, I wrote my first poems. Then I ventured into composition, winning one of the largest contests for emerging music, the Tour Music Fest. In recent years, I have felt an increasing need to share my music with others, but in reality, this need has probably always been there, even if I hadn't nurtured it. Many of my compositions have been broadcast on Battiti on Radio 3 and on RaiUno. For the past few years, I have also been writing songs in English, and I am becoming more and more passionate about it. For me, music has no barriers; it is my most intimate and personal language.
Could you tell us more about your award-winning work? For instance, how did you prepare it, bring it to life, or any interesting stories behind the scenes?
Tanguerìa was born spontaneously; I just transcribed what came out in a flow. It was a time in my life when I had a group that played Piazzolla, which probably influenced me a little. At that time, I was also playing Prokofiev, and perhaps that influenced me too! When I compose, I always follow spontaneous ideas—first the heart speaks, then the mind, but I believe that the mind and heart must always be connected, and in the end, they are. In fact, I believe that the heart is truly free when it is able to translate without filters what naturally happens in the mind, without forcing anything, but through a play of attractions and reflections. Of course, personal background and training always play a significant role. The music I studied has always deeply resonated with me.
What do you believe defines a great Composer, and how do you incorporate your unique style into your music?
A composer is great when he manages to make the most complex things seem accessible, when he reaches the heart even after an extreme process of metabolizing real complexity. Because reality may seem simple, but in truth, it is varied, full of nuances. And the composer must give voice to the beauty and uniqueness of the moment captured in the richness of the present.
I believe that my style mainly comes from my poetic soul. My mother wrote poems in a mystical tone, and I inherited the love for the transcendental. However, in my poems, for example, I am also very passionate and carnal, not only idealistic. Let's say that two souls converge in me: one that leads me to idealize the present in a lyrical form, sometimes borrowing the concept of Decadent Ecstasy, and the other tied to the more playful side, which can be translated into virtuosity and vibrant rhythm.
Can you recall a memorable moment from your career that had a significant impact on you?
A beautiful moment in my career was my tour in Mexico, where I recorded piano pieces, soprano, and orchestra by the composer Venus Rey Jr., written for me and based on my poetic lyrics. I recorded the piano part in real-time with the San Luis Potosí Symphony Orchestra, and it was memorable! This was followed by a concert, which was a sold-out event at the Teatro de La Paz. A CD was also recorded, released by Da Vinci Classics, "I quattro elementi" by Venus Rey, based on my poetic lyrics.
Would you like to share your experience participating in our competition and anyone you'd like to thank (such as mentors, supporters or other team members)?
I was happy to participate in your competition, but even more so for the award I received. It’s another sign that my art is reaching people. This year, I have received many recognitions, even in some other competitions, and I’m truly happy!
I want to thank my mother, who listens to me through my turbulences, and myself, because for anyone who wants to bring something different from what people are normally used to, it’s always difficult. I hope that competitions continue to help us express ourselves and bring our music into people's homes. Join me and my music on my YouTube Channel Meghan B. Thank you!
